Privacy
Trail Editor has no accounts of its own and keeps no data about you on its servers. What it needs stays in your browser, and what you map goes to OpenStreetMap.
Trail Editor (traileditor.app)
- Sign-in: you sign in with your OpenStreetMap account on OpenStreetMap's own page. The sign-in token it gives back is kept in your browser (local storage) and used only to talk to OpenStreetMap. Sign Out removes it.
- In your browser: your settings, the regions you've picked and your edits until you upload them. Nothing of this is sent to Trail Editor's servers.
- Your edits are uploaded to OpenStreetMap under your account, where they're public, as all OpenStreetMap edits are.
- Page counts: Simple Analytics counts page visits. It sets no cookies, uses no other browser storage, and doesn't collect or store IP addresses.
-
Hosting (Cloudflare): the site and its trail data are
served by Cloudflare. Like any host, Cloudflare handles each request,
including your IP address and browser details, to deliver the site and
protect it from abuse. Its bot protection may also set its own cookies
and browser storage (such as
cf_clearance,__cf_oband_cfPre_tabId) to tell browsers from bots; these are for security only, not tracking or advertising. Trail Editor itself sets no cookies. See Cloudflare's privacy policy and cookie list. - Maps and data: the map loads basemaps, imagery and elevation from their providers (such as OpenFreeMap, OpenStreetMap, Esri, USGS and AWS). Like any website, they receive your IP address when your browser asks them for a map tile.
TrailEditor.app: Strava Heatmap Extension
This optional browser extension shows Strava's Global Heatmap in Trail Editor, for tracing trails into OpenStreetMap.
- It asks Strava for heatmap tiles straight from your browser. Your browser sends your Strava login cookies with those requests, to Strava only, just as it does when you use strava.com. The extension itself never reads or stores them, and never sees your password.
- Strava receives those requests, so it can see which parts of the map you load, as it can on its own site.
- It passes only the heatmap images to Trail Editor's pages. Nothing goes to Trail Editor's servers or anyone besides Strava.
- It runs only on Trail Editor's own pages, and it talks only to Strava's heatmap (content-a.strava.com and www.strava.com).
- It collects no data, has no tracking and sells nothing.
Strava's own handling of your data is covered by Strava's privacy policy.
